REVELATIONS BEHIND THE EVEREST STORY

At Home with the First Pinoy Everest Summiteers - by Leah Katigbak

THE FULL DRAMA EXPOSED

SACRIFICE is the thrust of it all.

From the very start, Leo, 32 and Pastour, 33, were ready to sacrifice their own lives for this quest.

Sir Art explains, “I was discussing with Pastour and Leo regularly, to psychologically prepare them that we came there to waive the flag at the peak. If they perish, then that’s part of what we’re trying to do. And what, when they went up, there was no promise na magkakapera naman sila eh. And I think we have succeeded. Everywhere we go, proud yung mga Pilipino sa ginawa namin eh.”

“Pag mag-cross ka ng icefall, considered patay ka na eh. Anytime meron p’wedeng mangyari sa ‘yo kaya emotional talaga,” Pastour shares.

And the full drama lies on the drama behind…

Sir Art emphasizes, “the drama behind it, mas grabe. Yun ang pinakamahirap. D’yan kayo iiyak… Kaya umiiyak sila kasi they had to say goodbye. They might not be able to come back. When we left base camp, after we have succeeded, 16 people died already. More people died this year than the previous years. Parang ang nakita lang ng mga tao ang dali-dali lang, because it was well planned, meticulous in details, everything… but people were dying. It was really tough.”
